A meta description is an HTML attribute that provides a brief summary of a webpage. In Google Search, it appears as the grey text beneath the blue title link, giving searchers a preview of what they'll find on the page. While Google doesn't use it as a direct ranking factor, a well-crafted description significantly increases click-through rate (CTR) — the percentage of people who click your result when they see it.
The recommended length is 150–160 characters (or roughly 920–990 pixels wide in Google's rendering). Shorter descriptions leave empty space that Google often fills with random page content. Longer descriptions get truncated with an ellipsis, cutting off your call to action. This tool measures both character count and estimated pixel width so you can hit the sweet spot on both desktop and mobile.
Certain words and phrases consistently improve click-through rates: free, instant, guide, step-by-step, proven, official, guaranteed, limited, exclusive, new, easy, fast, complete, best, top, how to, learn, discover, get, download, try, now, today, 2025. This checker detects them and factors them into your CTR estimate.
