A meta title (also called the title tag) is the HTML element that defines the title of a webpage. It appears as the clickable blue headline in Google Search results, as the browser tab label, and as the default title when the page is bookmarked. Along with the meta description, it's the single most influential on-page SEO element — both for ranking and for click-through rate.
Google typically displays titles up to about 580 pixels wide on desktop (roughly 50–60 characters in a standard font). Titles wider than this get truncated with an ellipsis (…), which can cut off important keywords and hurt CTR. On mobile, the limit is slightly narrower, around 55 characters. This checker calculates both the character count AND the estimated pixel width so you can optimize for both devices.
Characters are easy to count but not the whole story — the letter "W" is much wider than "i" in Google's SERP font (Arial). A 58-character title with many wide letters might still get truncated, while a 63-character title using narrow letters might fit perfectly. This tool measures pixel width using the same font metrics Google uses, giving you a more accurate prediction.
